Claude Duet connects Shopify and expands agent Shop Pay
Claude Duet launches in a US research preview with Shopify tools and Shop Pay for agent purchases. Eligibility, approval rules and merchant testing limits.
Anthropic has opened a US research preview of Claude Duet, with Shopify among its connected tools. The launch brings two distinct developments for commerce: assistance with running a store and Shop Pay purchases inside the agent, including from stores outside Shopify.
What is available
In its 21 October announcement, Anthropic describes an assistant that prepares work in the background and contacts the user when attention is needed. Access starts through a waitlist for US Pro and Max subscribers, with a separate mobile app and access through claude.ai.
Duet uses the same plan limits as other Claude activity. Its background checks consume that allowance and run every few hours, rather than continuously. Anthropic acknowledges that it can misread context or prioritise incorrectly.
Store operations and checkout are different features
Anthropic lists setting up, designing and managing a Shopify store among its capabilities. A richer visual storefront editor is described as coming soon. Treat that editor as a future feature, not something the preview already provides.
Shopify’s launch post separately says Shop Pay works for purchases in Duet and that this is its first opening of Shop Pay in agents to stores not hosted on Shopify. That is a statement about checkout inside the agent, not an announcement that every non-Shopify website now has a native Shop Pay button.
The post does not specify a merchant enrolment procedure, fees or every checkout exception. Store owners should not infer those commercial details from the announcement. We have not tested a live purchase or store configuration through the preview.

Start with a bounded merchant task
Our suggested first test is a draft daily trading summary with a clear date range and links to the underlying records. Compare its numbers with Shopify before depending on its interpretation. Agree what should trigger a notification and what can wait for a scheduled summary.
A periodic assistant is not a replacement for urgent checkout, payment or stock monitoring. If the task requires immediate detection, keep the existing operational alert and escalation process. Judge the preview by accuracy, useful work completed and review time, not by how many messages it produces.
Anthropic says Duet waits for approval before sending messages, making payments, signing documents or deleting items. Keep the review meaningful: inspect the recipient, amount, destination and requested action before accepting it. Vendor safeguards are not a guarantee that an assistant will always interpret a business task correctly.
