Google Ads automated promotions: check before 12 October

Some advertisers face a 12 October change. Check eligibility, the opt-out setting and your website’s live offers.

Some Google Ads advertisers have been notified that automated promotions will start pulling offers from their websites into eligible campaigns from 12 October 2026. Before your next sale, check whether you want Google selecting that promotional copy.

Search Engine Roundtable reported the Google email on 5 October. This is a notification to some advertisers about an existing feature, not evidence that every account or Shopify store is affected.

📅
Before 12 October: review your account setting and the offers visible on your landing pages. Check your own notification rather than assuming the date applies to every campaign.

Check campaign eligibility first

Google’s documentation limits eligibility to active Search or Performance Max campaigns with location assets and no manual promotions currently running. Advertising-policy compliance is also required.

Google extracts offers from website pages. Each automated promotion can serve for less than 24 hours, then be enabled again if the offer remains verifiable on the site. Do not treat that short window as an automatic expiry for an old homepage banner.

How to switch automated promotions off

  1. Open Assets in the Campaigns menu.
  2. Use the filter bar’s three-dot menu to open Account level automated assets.
  3. Open that page’s three-dot menu, then Advanced settings.
  4. Find Automated promotions, select Off, and give a reason if prompted.

To inspect generated offers, filter Assets to Promotion and look for Google AI in the Added by column. Google recommends manual promotions when exact promotional content needs control.

Give your offers an expiry check

For a Shopify store, make a list of every place the next promotion appears: homepage, collection banner, product page, announcement copy and landing page. Assign someone to remove or update each item when the offer ends.

Check the actual basket against the advertised saving. A code restricted to one customer group needs clear terms; a removed discount should not still be advertised by an old campaign page. These are useful editorial checks whether you leave automation on or off.

Record the account setting and campaign before changing it, then review the offers that actually appear. Avoid changing several unrelated advertising settings at once if you want to understand the effect.
