Google AI Mode and Gemini checkout: what eligible Shopify stores should check
Review Shopify’s Google direct-checkout setting, product limitations and reporting requirements before the holiday rush.
Eligible US Shopify merchants should review their Google AI Mode and Gemini checkout setting before the holiday rush. Shopify says direct checkout is enabled by default for eligible stores during a phased rollout. Availability is not universal.
The Shopify channel guide currently requires a US-based store selling to US customers, eligible products in Merchant Center, completed store policies and agreement to the applicable terms.
Check where the purchase finishes
To control direct checkout, open Sales channels → Agentic, disable Allow Shopify to manage for me, select Google AI Mode and Gemini, change Direct checkout, then save. Switching it off preserves product discovery but sends buyers to your store to purchase.
Shopify lists limitations including subscriptions, bundles, customised and B2B-only products, local delivery and collection, and client-side analytics pixels. Some checkout customisations may not appear. Check the full channel guide against your own checkout dependencies before choosing a setting.
A channel decision, with operational consequences
Shopify’s agentic storefronts overview says merchants retain the customer relationship and post-purchase experience. Orders carry channel or referrer attribution in the admin. Treat this as an additional sales channel to review with your operations and analytics teams.
Our recommendation is to pick a representative product and write down everything required to sell it correctly: delivery choices, personalisation, essential checkout input and the events your reporting expects. Compare that list with the documented channel support. A simple stocked item and a made-to-order product may need different decisions.
Have the person responsible for reconciliation check where a channel order appears and how it will enter existing reporting. Avoid treating a change in browser tracking as evidence of a change in sales until the order records have been checked.
Google’s wider rollout is a separate check
In its 16 September holiday update, Google announced additional UCP integration-hub capabilities, including cart transfer and checkout testing. It describes those capabilities as rolling out in the US, with Australia and Canada to follow early next year. That roadmap does not establish eligibility for an individual Shopify store.
Google’s Merchant Center onboarding guidance directs merchants using a commerce platform to consult that provider about its integration. For Shopify merchants, start with the Shopify channel documentation and the options available in your admin before commissioning a separate UCP implementation.
This is also a different purchasing path from Shopify’s WebMCP tools for browser agents. Keep channel-specific checkout tests and performance reporting separate so you can see which experience an order actually used.
15 October update: Universal Cart launches in the US
Google has announced the US rollout of Universal Cart across Search and the Gemini app. Shoppers can keep products from different retailers together, receive price and restock notifications, and see relevant promotional codes and payment-card benefits.
Google describes two purchase routes: paying with Google Pay inside the cart at supported stores, or transferring items to a merchant’s cart to finish there. It names Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair and many Shopify merchants. The retailer remains the seller of record and supplies confirmations and customer support.
This is a shopper-facing launch, not confirmation that every Shopify shop or product qualifies for direct checkout. Keep the eligibility and checkout checks above. Our recommendation is to test both the direct purchase and storefront handoff for a representative eligible item, checking current prices, stock, discounts and order attribution before making customer-facing promises.
Universal Cart 🛒 is rolling out in the U.S across Google Search and the Gemini app. It’s giving everyone an intelligent shopping cart and a new hub for shopping on Google.
