Shop MCP brings product search and Shop Pay to AI agents
Shopify’s 13 October launch connects product discovery, carts, checkout and orders. Here is what merchants and agent builders should check.
Shopify launched Shop MCP on 13 October 2026, giving compatible AI agents one connection for product discovery, carts, Shop Pay checkout and order tracking. Its 17 tools reach more than one billion products in Shopify Catalog; search does not require an API key.
For merchants, this adds another way for a shopper to find and buy a product. For developers, it joins steps that previously required separate work. Orders placed through the agent appear in the merchant’s Shopify admin.
What the Shop skill adds
The companion Shop skill is Shopify’s shopper-facing entry point. It lets people configure an agent as a personal shopping assistant. The developer tools are available separately at shop.dev.
Shop says signing in enables search ranked using the shopper’s preferences and shopping history. Its documentation also describes a route for purchases outside Shopify: after the buyer approves in Shop Pay, the agent receives single-use payment credentials for the merchant’s existing checkout.
Turn any existing Agent into the world's best personal shopper for you.

Checks for merchants and builders
Our suggested merchant test is to look for a handful of your own products and compare what the agent receives with the store: variants, current prices, currency and availability. Treat a successful search as a discovery check, not proof of a completed purchase or incremental revenue.
The developer site warns that inferred attributes can be absent or inaccurate. It also prohibits caching results and rehosting merchant images, so builders should review the usage rules before designing a persistent product index.
At launch, checkout status must be polled because there are no webhooks. Build the confirmation and order-status steps into testing, rather than stopping when an item reaches a cart.
For the broader store preparation work, see our agentic commerce merchant checklist. Product discovery also depends on the price information available to shopping agents.
