Shopify fixes Admin CLS spike: what app teams should check

Shopify confirms a fix after app developers reported an Admin layout-shift spike. Retest affected screens and distinguish fresh results from historical metrics.

Shopify says it has fixed an issue on its side after app developers reported a rise in Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) inside the Admin. For app teams, the useful next step is to retest the affected screens and keep evidence of any remaining shifts before changing their own interface to compensate.

Shopify product lead David Cameron said on 7 October that a fix had been deployed. Eytan Seidman, who works on Shopify’s developer platform, confirmed that the issue was on Shopify’s side and that a fix had shipped.

The reports concern embedded apps in the Admin. They do not by themselves show that a merchant’s storefront has become slower, or that an affected app has lost its Built for Shopify badge.

Why app developers were concerned

CLS measures unexpected movement of page content. Shopify uses it as one of the performance checks for Built for Shopify, so a sudden increase can matter even when an app team has not changed its own code.

The current requirements set a CLS target of 0.1 or less at the 75th percentile of page loads. Assessment requires at least 100 CLS calls over the preceding 28 days. A fresh test and the historical assessment window therefore answer different questions; a deployed fix does not establish that every dashboard metric has already recovered.

Developers discussed possible causes and CSS workarounds in the community thread. The staff confirmation establishes that Shopify deployed a fix. It does not establish those proposed root causes, and we have not verified a badge loss caused by this incident.

What to check now

Reproduce the app journeys where the shift appeared, recording the screen, time and app version. Compare new observations with the earlier spike and monitor the assessment window separately. If movement remains, send a reproducible example through the existing community discussion or support route.

Our recommendation is to avoid shipping an app-level workaround merely to counter an assumed Shopify interface bug. If your team already added one, review it against the fixed Admin before removing or changing it. Internal Admin styling is not a reliable foundation for an app’s layout.

For store owners, an app vendor can confirm whether its embedded interface was affected and whether it has retested. There is no evidence here that merchants need to uninstall apps or alter their storefront theme.

Retest before reacting. Shopify confirms a fix. That is not evidence that every historical metric has recovered, or that any app lost its Built for Shopify badge.
