Shopify app review disputes: what you can report

Shopify investigates duplication and other policy violations. How to document a dispute without treating every negative review as fake.

Shopify’s app review rules distinguish a complaint a developer disagrees with from a review that breaches policy. That distinction matters when responding to a sudden cluster of low ratings: a reporting process exists, but a negative rating does not automatically qualify for removal.

A disputed cluster draws attention

In a 22 October post, Kaching cofounder Erikas Mališauskas said five similar one star billing complaints had appeared within 15 minutes on 17 October. Shopify’s Blair Beckwith replied asking for details. We have verified those public statements, but have not established a removal decision or independently verified the developer’s account of the reviewers’ relationship. This article does not identify the merchants or treat their complaints as proven fake.

What the policy covers

Shopify’s review guidance lists inappropriate content, personal information, conflicts of interest and duplication as grounds for investigation. Duplication can span more than one account. Shopify may edit or remove a review, but says it cannot discuss investigation outcomes.

The overall rating is weighted towards recent, useful and trustworthy reviews, rather than calculated as a simple star average. Reviews that are not published do not contribute to that rating.

Developers can respond publicly and the reviewer is notified. Shopify recommends respectful engagement where the disagreement concerns the substance of feedback. Review requests must be neutral and cannot offer incentives; resolving a problem does not permit coercing a merchant to change a rating.

Build a factual report

Our recommendation is to save the review links, visible dates and exact repeated text, then explain which policy criterion you believe applies. Separate observations from inference. Similar wording or timing is evidence to investigate, not proof of a particular person’s motive.

Keep private billing records and customer details out of a public reply. Address the complaint itself, explain the available support route and avoid promises about what Shopify will do. A refund should resolve a billing issue on its merits, not serve as payment for a better review.

For merchants choosing an app, read the specific complaint and the developer’s response alongside the rating. A cluster merits attention, but neither the developer’s allegation nor the reviewer’s star score settles the underlying facts.

ℹ️
A report is a request for investigation, not a removal guarantee. Do not label reviewers fraudulent solely because you disagree with their feedback.
