Shopify Catalog 3D models: prepare your product media
What Shopify’s Catalog media support means for product uploads, 3D scanning and visual shopping apps, with official guidance and original demonstrations.
Shopify Catalog can return product videos and 3D models to shopping apps, and let developers search specifically for products with those assets. For merchants, the practical starting point is product media: a room-placement experience needs a usable model, not just a photograph of the product.
The capability was documented on 15 September 2026 and highlighted again by Shopify’s Gil on 5 October. It is worth separating that developer feature from a promise of universal visibility: uploading a model does not guarantee that every AI shopping service will display it.
What the Catalog change enables
Shopify’s September changelog says Catalog responses can include video and 3D asset links. A search can require video, a 3D model, or both. Requiring both narrows results to products that have both assets.
This gives an app a way to find suitable products before building a visual experience around them. It also explains the merchant implication: products without a model cannot satisfy a query explicitly requiring one. That is a specific filter condition, not evidence that ordinary product discovery has stopped working.
PSA: The Shopify global catalog MCP now supports searching and returning products with 3D models. One of my favorite new features we’ve launched. So many fun commerce applications now possible. 🛋️ https://t.co/DNQ2awVbtF pic.twitter.com/tkHz4yQaTE

Prepare a product that benefits from 3D
Our recommendation is to start with one product where shape and scale matter, such as a vase or a piece of furniture. Keep accurate dimensions and useful photographs alongside the model: a visual asset should help answer a buying question, not replace the product description.
Shopify accepts GLB and USDZ models up to 500 MB. Files above 15 MB are automatically optimised, and Shopify produces both formats for device compatibility. Check the finished model for distorted details and misleading scale before treating it as ready for customers.
In the admin, open Products → your product → Media, then upload the file or select an existing one. Shopify’s media guide allows up to 250 media items per product, with separate store allowances for videos and models. These assets cannot be used as variant media, so check carefully how shoppers will understand colour or size differences.

No model yet? Check the iOS scanner
The Shopify app’s 3D scanner works on supported iPhone Pro, Pro Max and iPad Pro devices. In a product’s Media section, select the scanner, follow its capture prompts, review the result and add it to the product.
Shopify recommends soft, diffused light and space to move around the object. Small, reflective, thin or flexible products can be difficult to capture. Review the actual model from every angle before publishing it; a poor scan can make a product harder to assess.
Check the storefront and the app separately
Your theme must support video and 3D display. Shopify lists its Online Store 2.0 themes and Horizon family as supported; consult the developer for a third-party theme. A working product-page viewer verifies that storefront experience, not how another shopping app renders the asset.
For broader channel controls and measurement, use our Shopify AI-shopping merchant checklist. Measure completed orders and returns separately rather than assuming that adding 3D will improve either.
A developer caveat before testing
The changelog requires the draft Global Catalog extension to receive video and 3D assets; the stable version still returns images. Test your profile, returned asset formats and rendering together.
A 26 September community report describes empty filtered results despite models appearing in unfiltered searches. The page reviewed contains no resolution. This is one developer’s report, not proof of a general outage or a confirmed fix; validate the behaviour with your own queries before relying on it.
