Can service businesses appear in Shopify’s AI channels?

Shopify Catalog excludes services, but catalogue distribution and AI web discovery are different. Here is what merchants can check.

Shopify Catalog currently excludes services and product add-ons. That matters for businesses hoping to reach shoppers through AI channels that use the catalogue. It does not, however, establish that a service business is absent from every AI answer or search result.

A 10 October question from Darling Pies highlighted concern about service businesses being left out of agentic commerce. The useful starting point is the narrower rule in Shopify’s current Catalog requirements, rather than treating all AI discovery as one channel.

Which rule applies?

The excluded category includes professional and personal services, installation, extended warranties and maintenance plans. Shopify classifies products using their information; its classification can differ from the category a merchant selects in the admin. Accurate descriptions help classification, but changing a label does not make an excluded service eligible.

These are the requirements checked on 16 October 2026. We have not established that the service exclusion is a new October policy change.

Catalog eligibility and open-web discovery are separate. An excluded service can still be encountered through other discovery methods; inclusion or exclusion is not a guarantee about a particular AI answer.

Check the reason before changing the store

In Sales channels → Agentic → Sources → Shopify Catalog, an ineligible store can open the warning to see its reason. Shopify lists several possible store-level problems, including account standing, a password-protected storefront and B2B-only access. A store-level warning and a product-category exclusion need different investigations.

Our recommendation for a business selling both goods and services is to review the two separately. Keep genuine service descriptions accurate, identify which listings are affected and give support concrete examples if the classification appears wrong. Do not relabel a service as a physical product simply to seek distribution.

What remains discoverable?

Shopify’s discovery documentation says AI channels may still find products through web crawling and indexing when a store is ineligible for Catalog. It also distinguishes distribution routes: Google AI Mode and Gemini use the Google & YouTube channel, while Meta surfaces use Facebook and Instagram by Meta.

That is why a single Catalog status cannot answer every visibility question. For the team reviewing acquisition, our advice is to record the specific channel, listing and customer journey being tested. Keep normal website information clear and accessible, and check each destination’s own eligibility requirements before promising that a booking or service will appear there.
