Shopify metafield owner_type becomes required in 2027-01

Checkout and Customer Account UI extensions declaring metafields must add owner_type before moving to API version 2027-01.

Shopify app teams should add owner_type to metafield declarations before upgrading Checkout or Customer Account UI extensions to API version 2027-01. Shopify’s 8 October announcement says deployments using that version or later will be blocked if a declaration omits it.

The field is already accepted on version 2026-10, giving developers a way to prepare before the upgrade. Extensions that do not declare metafields in their configuration are unaffected.

This is a deployment requirement tied to the extension’s API version. The announcement does not say every live Shopify checkout will stop working on 1 January.

What the field identifies

A metafield stores custom data against a resource. owner_type tells Shopify which resource owns the requested value, such as a product or customer, so it can load the relevant resource types.

The checkout documentation distinguishes declarations available throughout the extension from declarations limited to a particular rendering target. Both need review: extensions.metafields and extensions.targeting.metafields.

Prepare the next deployment

  1. Inventory the metafield declarations in each affected extension’s shopify.extension.toml.
  2. Assign the appropriate owner type to each entry. When the same namespace and key are needed from different resources, declare each resource separately.
  3. Redeploy and resolve metafield validation errors before moving to 2027-01.

For a merchant using an app, our recommendation is to ask its provider whether the affected extensions have been checked. Request confirmation against the app’s actual configuration rather than assuming that every checkout app needs this change.

For an in-house team, include the check in the release handover: which extension was reviewed, which API version was tested and whether the relevant custom data still appears where expected. That makes the preparation verifiable when the upgrade is scheduled.
