Shopify Polaris 2.0 is stable: apps must opt in
Polaris 2.0 is stable, but existing apps do not switch automatically. What developers and merchants should know about the release channels.
Shopify has made Polaris Web Components 2.0 stable, giving app developers a production release that matches the updated Shopify admin. The 22 October announcement is an upgrade opportunity, not an automatic change to every installed app.
Existing apps stay on their chosen version
Shopify says the legacy Polaris bundle and the version-one channel remain on 1.1. They will not silently move to version two. Developers who want the new appearance must explicitly adopt the version-two channel.
That matters for merchants commissioning app work: the stable release does not establish that every app in your admin has already changed. Ask your app provider whether it has adopted the release and tested its interface, rather than assuming that Shopify’s announcement completes the migration.
Stable and pinned are different choices
The official versioning guide distinguishes a stable major channel, which receives subsequent stable releases in that major version, from a pinned minor channel. A minor pin remains on that release apart from critical security fixes.
Release-candidate bundles do not become the stable channel in place. Teams that tested a candidate need to choose the stable channel explicitly. Shopify’s documentation recommends the stable major channel for production use; a minor pin gives teams more control over when they take later minor updates.

Check the workflows your team actually uses
Our recommendation is to test the app’s routine tasks before rolling out an interface update: navigating between sections, submitting forms, reading validation messages and using the interface on smaller screens. Include keyboard navigation and the merchant’s chosen admin appearance in that review.
The release announcement does not set a compulsory migration deadline. Treat it as a planned app update with verification, not a reason to rush an untested change during holiday preparation.
