Shopify POS recognition: receipts are not marketing consent
Shopify expands POS customer recognition. Check app versions, receipt selection and marketing opt-in before treating a saved profile as a subscriber.
Shopify’s 28 October 2026 POS update expands recognition to eligible shoppers who previously checked out through Shopify Payments. A buyer can choose a digital receipt and share their details, connecting the purchase to a customer profile without dictating an email address to staff.
The distinction for retailers is important: this can improve the record of who bought something, but marketing still depends on the customer having opted in. A larger customer list is not automatically a larger marketing audience.
Check the till and receipt setup
The release requires POS version 11.17, Shopify Payments for POS and Shopify Network Intelligence enabled. A buyer-facing display needs Customer View 11.17 or later. Without one, enable customer receipt selection in Shopify admin.
The receipt-selection guide explains that staff turn the device towards the customer when there is no customer-facing display. The customer chooses a receipt option; digital choices can include email, SMS or the Shop app.
Keep receipt delivery separate from campaign eligibility
Our recommendation is to test the whole handover with staff before relying on it during a busy shift. Check what the buyer sees, how the purchase appears in the customer record and whether marketing preferences remain clear. Do not make an email address or a new profile your campaign’s only eligibility condition.
For an existing retail business, compare the quality of the resulting records before changing segmentation. Look for duplicate profiles and confirm that staff understand how to handle a customer who wants a printed receipt. We have verified Shopify’s documentation; we have not tested the flow in a merchant account.
