Shopify’s ScriptTag cutoff is 1 October 2026: what merchants need to check

Shopify stops ScriptTag creates and updates on 1 October. What keeps running, what changes in March, and what to ask your app provider.

Shopify’s announced cutoff for creating or updating storefront ScriptTags is 1 October 2026. Merchants reviewing their apps before the holiday trading period should ask providers whether their storefront features and tracking have moved to a supported replacement.

Existing ScriptTags will continue running until 1 March 2027. Those are separate milestones: the 1 October cutoff limits changes and new installations that depend on this mechanism; March ends Shopify’s injection of the scripts into storefronts. Shopify set out the dates in its deprecation announcement.

Shopify’s visual below illustrates an app embed as an overlay on a storefront—the kind of visible functionality that an app can deliver through a theme extension. It is an explanatory diagram, not a screenshot of the deprecation notice.

What changes on 1 October?

The affected operations are the GraphQL scriptTagCreate and scriptTagUpdate mutations, plus POST and PUT requests to the REST ScriptTag resource. Shopify says the restriction applies across API versions. Keeping an app on an older version will not postpone it. Reading and deleting existing records remains possible.

This concerns Shopify’s ScriptTag mechanism for loading app JavaScript. It is not an instruction to remove every JavaScript file from your theme.

Which replacement should an app use?

Shopify’s migration documentation distinguishes two routes: app embed blocks for storefront functionality, and web pixels for analytics or conversion tracking. App embeds must be enabled on the published theme. A later theme change needs another activation check.

Admin-created custom apps have an additional constraint: they cannot use these extension-based replacements. The developer maintaining one needs to review Shopify’s separate guidance for that case.

Four questions to send your app provider

  • Does our installed version still depend on a storefront ScriptTag?
  • Can a new installation work after 1 October without creating one?
  • Does migration require us to activate an embed or approve additional access?
  • How will you confirm the replacement works and remove the old implementation?

Ask for answers tied to your store and installed version. A general statement that an app supports Shopify does not tell you whether your particular installation has migrated.

Our recommendation is to test the feature in a representative customer journey, then check the associated events or reports. Record the result and name the person responsible for the remaining work. That gives your team a useful migration record when holiday changes become harder to coordinate.

Shopify warns that running the old script and its replacement together can duplicate events or interface elements. Equally, removing the old script before an app embed is active can leave a gap. Coordinate the switch with the provider rather than deleting scripts pre-emptively.
