TikTok Buy Direct: what Shopify merchants should check
Buy Direct needs a UCP integration and testing eligibility. Here is what Shopify merchants should check before planning an implementation.
TikTok announced Buy Direct and Shopping Assistant on 5 October 2026, naming Shopify among the commerce partners it is building with. The tools bring product questions and purchases closer to the videos and ads that introduce shoppers to a brand.
For merchants, the immediate next step is to ask about testing eligibility. TikTok has not announced an automatic switch that enables these experiences across all Shopify stores.
The Advertising Week announcement also introduces TikTok Ad Network to US advertisers, with placements across nearly 400,000 apps worldwide. That wider advertising reach is a separate development from access to the new shopping tools.
How the two shopping tools differ
In TikTok’s product explanation, Shopping Assistant answers questions using merchant information on a product page inside TikTok’s browser. A shopper can then continue to the merchant’s checkout within that browser.
Buy Direct provides a native checkout using saved payment details and addresses, plus order tracking in the app. TikTok says the brand remains the merchant of record and a Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) integration is required.
What to ask before joining a test
TikTok directs interested advertisers to their sales partner for eligibility and setup details. A named platform partnership alone does not establish that your particular store, market or account can participate.
Before committing development time, ask who supplies the integration, which products and markets qualify, and how orders, refunds, tax and customer support will flow through your existing systems. Request the commercial terms and reporting details as well.
Our practical recommendation is to review the product information an assistant could use: sizing, materials, compatibility, stock and delivery promises. Missing or contradictory details are worth fixing across your store regardless of whether you join this test.
Keep any initial evaluation small enough to reconcile individual orders. Compare completed purchases and contribution after costs, rather than treating fewer checkout steps as proof of better profitability. TikTok’s announcement is a product proposal, not independent evidence of a conversion lift for your business.
