Etsy’s AI rules: check photos, patterns and exceptions

Etsy requires real product evidence and restricts AI-generated instructions. Review existing listings and the exceptions for different product types.

Etsy sellers should review existing listings after the marketplace’s 22 October AI policy update. The changes concern both what a seller creates and how the listing represents it: most products need a real, unedited photograph, while AI-generated functional instructions are prohibited.

For founders selling through Etsy alongside a Shopify store, start with the Etsy listing itself. A shared asset library does not mean the same image treatment meets every channel’s requirements.

Keep the required photograph separate from edited images

Etsy’s image policy requires most products to have at least one unedited photograph of the actual item against a real background. Other images may be edited, provided they accurately represent what the customer receives.

The exceptions matter. Authorised stock mockups can be used for qualifying print-on-demand products. Digital downloads generally need a preview or excerpt; non-visual items such as audio can use representative imagery. Custom-made items should show real examples of previous work. Patterns and similar products need a real photograph of a finished result.

AI artwork and AI instructions have different rules

Etsy’s AI guidance continues to permit seller-prompted artwork with human creative input and disclosure. It prohibits bot-generated content without individual human involvement, AI prompt bundles, and AI-generated functional instructions such as recipes, craft patterns and assembly guides.

Our suggested first pass is to separate your catalogue into physical products, artwork, digital downloads and instructions. For each listing, record who created the underlying work, what the buyer receives, which image demonstrates it and where any required AI disclosure appears. Do not treat an attractive rendered result as evidence that a pattern actually works.

Review the live listing, not only the source files

The seller announcement says existing listings must be updated if they do not meet the requirements. Etsy is adding image guidance and a reporting option for potentially misleading AI imagery; initially, those reports will inform its understanding rather than trigger immediate enforcement.

Choose a small batch of active listings and compare the promised material, colour, scale and finish with the actual item. Keep the untouched photograph clearly identifiable in your asset library, so a later background replacement does not accidentally overwrite it. Assign an owner to check the published listing after any bulk image update.

Check the product-type exceptions before commissioning new photography. The general unedited-photo rule is not identical for physical goods, print-on-demand and digital downloads.
