Shop Pay Installments supports secondary entities: check eligibility market by market

Eligible secondary business entities can offer Shop Pay Installments. Check your plan, local payments account, currency and checkout routing before promoting it.

Shopify merchants selling through multiple business entities can activate Shop Pay Installments on eligible secondary entities, rather than treating the primary entity as the only place to offer it. Shopify listed the change in its 22 September 2026 changelog; its current FAQ confirms the support.

The practical task is an entity-by-entity checkout review. Enabling installments somewhere in your organisation does not mean every market or currency will show the option.

Check the plan and entity first. Shopify’s eligibility rules restrict multiple-entity Shopify Payments setups to Shopify Plus and Shopify Enterprise Commerce organisations. Installments eligibility is assessed separately for each entity.

Which entities qualify?

Both Shopify Payments and Shop Pay must be active. The country requirements pair a local Shopify Payments account with matching selling and payout currencies: USD for the US, CAD for Canada and GBP for the UK. An entity outside the supported countries does not qualify simply because it sells to customers there.

There is a specific territorial distinction: business entities in Puerto Rico can offer installments to US customers, but customers in Puerto Rico cannot use the service. Customer eligibility still applies separately.

Review existing entities separately

Shopify’s activation guide says existing eligible entities need individual activation. New eligible entities might have installments switched on when Shopify Payments is activated, so inspect their actual settings rather than assuming either state.

In Settings → Payments, select the entity’s Shopify Payments account, open Payment methods → Manage, then select Shop Pay Installments in the Shop Pay section and save. Review the financing options offered for that entity.

At checkout, the entity processing the order must have installments enabled, and the checkout currency must match its selling currency. Premium financing options are managed per entity; Shopify assesses Premium eligibility using the store’s overall average order value.

Check the customer journey before promoting it

Our recommendation is to keep a short matrix of target market, processing entity, checkout currency and enabled payment options. Use it to review representative checkout journeys and brief customer support. A missing installment option can be a routing or currency issue, not evidence that activation failed.

Payouts follow the entity that processed the order, through its Shopify Payments account and payout currency. Include that distinction in finance reconciliation.

Keep website and in-store messaging separate: Shopify’s activation documentation limits Shop Pay Installments for retail locations to US stores. Do not copy an online financing message across all POS locations.

If you are planning an October promotion, add this review to your campaign preparation checklist. The rollout establishes availability for eligible entities; it does not guarantee a conversion increase or customer financing approval.
