Shopify App Pricing migration: what merchants should check on their next bill
Existing app subscriptions can move to Shopify App Pricing without a new approval. Check the effective date, price behaviour and notices.
Shopify now lets app developers move existing Billing API subscriptions to Shopify App Pricing. According to the 29 September announcement, subscriptions transfer at the start of their next billing cycle without merchants having to reapprove the charge.
For store owners, the useful distinction is between a change in billing machinery and a change in billing terms. The migration announcement does not mean every app is moving immediately, nor does it establish that every merchant’s price will stay the same.
What your app provider can change
The Partner Dashboard handles straightforward moves to matching plans. More complex cases—including usage billing, private plans and price differences—use Shopify CLI. Apps already using Shopify App Pricing are not affected by this particular migration release.
Shopify’s migration documentation explicitly offers developers two price behaviours:
| Developer option | Meaning for the subscription |
|---|---|
| HONOR_BILLING_PRICE | Keep the existing subscription billing price |
| PLAN_PRICE | Apply the target plan’s price |
The same documentation describes merchant notifications and says an opt-out notice may be required when migration could change the amount paid. That includes a higher or lower recurring price and a move to usage pricing. The absence of a fresh charge-approval screen is therefore not a reliable way to determine whether the terms changed.
Three questions for an app provider
If an app tells you it is migrating, our recommendation is to ask for a concrete comparison:
- Which billing cycle? Ask for the effective date for your store, rather than the provider’s overall rollout date.
- Which terms? Compare recurring price, currency, interval and any usage charges with your current arrangement.
- Which notice? Ask where the change and any opt-out choice will appear so the person paying the bill can review it.
Save that answer beside the current invoice, then compare it with the first invoice after migration. If the amount differs, check the plan terms and usage before assuming the migration itself created a billing error.
For developers, the migration guide says enabling App Pricing affects new subscriptions first; existing Billing API subscriptions continue until moved. It also says subscriptions with active discounts cannot migrate until those discounts end. That helps explain why two stores using the same app may move at different times.
This is a billing review, separate from an app’s operational compatibility. Shipping apps may also need work for the market-driven shipping transition; confirmation on one issue does not answer the other.
