Pin Shopify in ChatGPT: a quicker route to everyday store tasks

Shopify’s ChatGPT plugin can now be pinned to the sidebar. What the shortcut does, how to connect, and which store tasks still need the admin.

Shopify announced on 30 September that its ChatGPT plugin can now be pinned to the sidebar. For store teams already working in ChatGPT, that gives Shopify a persistent entry point instead of making every session start with a fresh request.

The practical detail is in Shopify’s Help Centre: opening pinned Shopify brings up a home screen with recent store performance and task cards. Selecting a card starts the work in a conversation.

Connect the store, then keep Shopify within reach

OpenAI’s plugin documentation directs users to the Plugins tab to find and install plugins, completing any service connection when prompted. Start from Shopify’s official connection page to find the first-party integration.

Shopify says the plugin is free to use and supports an existing store or creating a new one. Additional stores each require approval. Once connected, mention @Shopify when asking for store work. Shopify’s announcement below shows the sidebar pinning feature.

Use one concrete task to test the connection

Our suggested first request is: “@Shopify, confirm which store is connected and show me its five most recent orders. Make no changes.” Compare the answer with the admin before handing over a larger job. For a team managing several brands, making the store name explicit is a useful habit.

The documented capabilities include product edits, collections, inventory and analytics. Some tasks open an editable panel beside the conversation. The limits matter: order lookups are read-only; refunds and cancellations remain in Shopify admin. The plugin cannot publish a theme or change payment and tax settings, and approved access still controls what it can do.

For a product update, our recommendation is to specify the product, intended fields and review point: draft the change first, check price and variant details, then ask for the intended action. A vague instruction such as “sort out the catalogue” makes the result harder to assess.

Keep store operations separate from customer discovery

Pinning is a convenience for the people running the store. Shopify describes customer discovery through Agentic Storefronts separately on its plugin page. There is no evidence here that adding a sidebar shortcut increases shopping recommendations or sales.

For the shopper-facing side, see our guide to Google AI Mode and Gemini checkout settings. Judge the plugin first on whether it makes a specific operational task easier to complete and verify.
