Shopify Flow can now buy shipping labels automatically

Automate label purchases for eligible orders, while keeping fulfilment-service exclusions, parcel settings and printing in view.

Shopify Flow can now buy shipping labels automatically for matching orders. The 15 October announcement adds a purchase action and a ready made workflow template, reducing the repeated buying step for merchants who handle their own dispatch.

You choose which orders qualify and configure the carrier, service, package, weight and ship date. Labels are then ready to print from the Shipping labels page. Buying and printing are separate steps.

Check fulfilment eligibility first

The action reference limits each purchase to one fulfilment order. A For each loop is needed when processing a list. Orders assigned to a third party fulfilment service are excluded, even when they have a valid fulfilment order.

For a store mixing its own dispatch with outsourced fulfilment, add a condition checking the assigned location or fulfilment service before the purchase step. Carrier availability also depends on the location, destination and parcel weight.

This action buys a shipping label. It does not replace printing, packing or checking that an order is ready to dispatch. Start with a narrow set of eligible orders.

Configure a controlled first workflow

Open the template linked from Shopify’s announcement and adapt it to your store before enabling it. For a custom workflow, use a trigger containing a fulfilment order, such as Fulfillment order ready to fulfill.

The action lets you select a specific shipping service or the cheapest available option. Review the package and weight settings, plus the timing of the shipping confirmation. Do not assume the cheapest option matches the delivery promise made at checkout.

Our suggested first test is a predictable parcel: one product type, one dispatch location and a known package. An express tag or a particular product could identify a separate branch later. These are editorial examples, not names of Shopify templates.

Keep exceptions out of the purchase path

Flow is a free app on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans. That does not make the shipping labels free. Treat enabling this workflow as permission for qualifying orders to incur a shipping purchase.

Before rollout, check how your existing payment, fraud-review and fulfilment holds interact with the trigger. Inspect the first completed runs and compare the purchased service, parcel data and notification timing with what your dispatch team expected. Expand only after those results are correct.

Shopify’s general label guidance also requires eligible fulfilment locations and excludes products stocked in or fulfilled from an app location. International shipments require HS codes and precise product descriptions; automation does not remove that preparation.

For UK checkout changes, our Royal Mail pickup-point guide covers collection eligibility and the return window. Check delivery promises separately from any label-buying automation.
