Managed Markets flat shipping: what Shopify guarantees

Early-access Managed Markets rates can protect qualifying shipping labels, but part of the cost moves into product prices. Check the full total.

Shopify’s Managed Markets can now set international shipping prices and protect qualifying labels against later carrier adjustments. The 24 October announcement introduces a trade-off: Shopify manages the rates, while part of the shipping cost moves into international product prices.

For a merchant weighing this before Black Friday, the useful comparison is the complete customer bill and expected payout—not the checkout shipping line alone.

Early access: Shopify says this feature is available only to certain merchants. Duty-inclusive pricing is required, and the rates cannot be edited manually.

What the guarantee covers

Shopify sets Standard and Express options by destination. Buying qualifying prepaid FedEx or DHL Express labels through Managed Markets protects against subsequent carrier cost adjustments. Using another label removes that protection; it is charged normally.

The shipping setup guide explains that buyer-facing rates do not vary with parcel weight, dimensions or address within a destination, although order value after discounts can affect them. Merchants can optionally absorb a recommended amount above a minimum order value, but cannot choose that amount themselves.

Review each market before switching

Open a market under Markets and review its Managed Markets settings. Shopify offers a preview of product prices, checkout totals and expected payouts. You can disable the feature by market to return to your own rates, losing the guarantee. Turning off duties and taxes in prices also disables these flat rates.

Our recommendation: compare a small basket, a typical basket and a heavy order against your current approach. Record the customer’s total and your margin for each, including discounts. A smaller shipping charge is not necessarily a lower overall price.

Also review your storefront after activation. Shopify’s help page says first activation adds an app-embed banner advertising the rates; it can be customised or disabled in the theme editor. Make sure its wording matches your shipping policy.
