Use Sidekick to plan BFCM segments before discounts

A practical workflow for using Shopify customer data to build BFCM segments, choose offers and check gift thresholds before launch.

Start Black Friday and Cyber Monday offer planning with customer groups, then decide what each group should receive. Shopify’s Sidekick can help with customer analysis and segment creation, but a generated segment is only useful once you have checked who it includes and whether the proposed offer makes economic sense.

BOGOS highlighted this approach in two posts on 19 October: analysing RFM groups and creating the selected customer segments. The vendor’s BFCM library pairs Sidekick prompts with offer tutorials. This is a practical planning guide, not a claim that Shopify launched RFM analysis that day.

Ask a question you can check

RFM refers to recency, frequency and monetary value: how recently customers bought, how often, and how much they spent. Shopify’s customer reports documentation says Sidekick can answer questions about RFM groups and customer order data, but not cohort projections.

Our suggested starting prompt is: “Compare my RFM groups by customer count, order frequency and spending. Explain the reporting period and any missing data before recommending three groups for BFCM.” Review the underlying report rather than treating the recommendation as a forecast of future revenue.

Create and inspect the audience

Shopify separately documents creating customer segments from natural language. Ask Sidekick to check existing segments before preparing another one, then inspect the conditions, count and a sample of matching customers. For an email campaign, include the appropriate marketing subscription condition instead of assuming every customer in the group can receive it.

A useful split to investigate might be recent repeat buyers, valuable customers who have lapsed, and newer customers with only one purchase. Those are planning examples, not universal definitions: use the groups and thresholds that match your store’s data.

Choose the offer after checking its cost

BOGOS’s library reports a $75 median gift threshold in its store sample. That vendor benchmark is not a recommended threshold for every Shopify merchant, and it does not prove a sales uplift. Start with your own basket values, product margin, fulfilment cost and available gift stock.

For example, compare a small gift against an equivalent discount using the actual cost to your business. Check what happens when a shopper removes an item and falls below the threshold, combines another discount, chooses a different market or buys the last available gift.

Review before activating

Confirm the audience, qualifying products, dates and time zone, redemption limits, discount combinations and storefront wording. Test both an eligible and an ineligible cart. Segment creation does not establish that every gift mechanic is supported natively; app-specific offers need their own configuration and checks.

Keep a record of the approved settings and an owner who can pause the offer. Use our broader BFCM launch checklist for the operational checks around discounts, notifications, inventory and delivery.
