Shopify removes the combined UI locale-file limit

UI extensions can include more translation files without hitting the former 256 KB combined cap. Individual files still have a 30 KB limit.

Shopify has removed the 256 KB combined size limit for UI extension locale files, easing a deployment constraint for apps that support many languages. The change took effect on 30 October 2026.

According to the developer changelog, it applies to apps with UI extensions across all API versions. Existing versions continue working and no mandatory migration is required.

The per-file limit remains

Each individual locale file is still limited to 30 KB. Translation formats, filenames and fallback behaviour are unchanged. Developers who previously trimmed translations or excluded languages to meet the combined cap can restore them in a new deployment, then check the translated interface in a development store.

For merchants, this removes one technical obstacle an app developer may have faced; it does not automatically translate an installed app. Ask the developer which languages its extension actually supports before promising a localised experience to customers.

Shopify’s localisation guide covers translated text, numbers and currencies. Checkout extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps still require Shopify Plus; this file-size change does not expand that eligibility.
