Shopify WhatsApp checkout consent: check sending eligibility before your first campaign

Collect WhatsApp opt-ins at Shopify checkout, then check subscriber regions, account setup and provider-switching restrictions before sending.

Shopify’s 10 September 2026 checkout update lets merchants collect WhatsApp marketing opt-ins during a purchase. The useful distinction is between capturing that preference and being ready to send a campaign: account setup, subscriber location and messaging rules still matter.

ℹ️
US customers are excluded from WhatsApp marketing sends. Shopify’s current requirements say a US-based store can send to subscribers in supported countries, but cannot send these marketing messages to customers in the United States. Do not confuse the store’s location with the recipient’s eligibility.

Set up the checkout opt-in

Shopify’s contact-information guide directs merchants to Settings → Checkout → Marketing opt-in. In the WhatsApp section, choose Checkout only and save.

If SMS and WhatsApp opt-ins are both active, the region controls determine where WhatsApp replaces the SMS checkbox. You can use Shopify’s recommended regions or select your own; SMS covers the remaining regions. The customer must submit checkout for the subscription preference to be saved.

Our recommendation is to test a representative checkout for each intended region. Check the wording, which checkbox appears and the saved customer preference. A phone number entered for delivery is not evidence of a WhatsApp marketing opt-in.

Confirm the sending account and audience

Shopify Messaging requires an eligible store, the app and a connected WhatsApp Business Account through Meta’s signup flow. Explicit opt-in is required. China and the restricted regions listed in the documentation are excluded; Brazil and Indonesia have additional conditions for sending outside the store’s home country.

Templates go to Meta for approval, and the default STOP instruction cannot be removed. These checks belong before the campaign calendar is finalised.

Check switching dates before disconnecting a provider

The setup guide includes an easily missed timing restriction: disconnecting an existing provider during the first four or last three days of a month can delay Shopify Messaging sends until the first day of the following month. Check that rule before moving a number used by an active campaign.

Shopify also says an existing WhatsApp Business Account with a payment method on file cannot be connected and requires a new account instead. Plan the account transition before disconnecting anything.

Existing subscribers can be imported with their WhatsApp consent status, but only when they already consented. Importing records does not create permission. Keep the evidence and origin of those preferences with your campaign records.

Start with a controlled campaign

Choose a relevant, opted-in audience and a clear reason to message it. Check the destination page, offer dates and support capacity. Review opt-outs as well as orders before increasing frequency. If you are preparing an October offer, use the promotion checklist alongside these channel checks.
