Walmart plans shopping agent profiles and controls

Walmart plans separate profiles and spending controls for shopping agents. What is announced, what remains in beta, and what merchants should test.

Walmart is preparing dedicated profiles for shopping agents, with separate purchase records and customer approval controls. Its 21 October announcement says Agent Profiles will launch within the following month. That is a rollout plan, not confirmation of general availability today.

What customers will control

Walmart says customers will be able to approve each purchase or authorise spending within a chosen limit. They can revoke an agent’s access. Additional approval may still be required within a limit, and agents will not receive payment-card details or be able to change payment methods. Walmart says its returns process also applies when an agent makes an unintended purchase.

The Gateway remains an early beta

The Walmart Agent Gateway page describes a direct connection for agents to access current product and fulfilment information, rather than scraping the consumer website. It lists verified identities, controlled permissions, observable actions, category restrictions and rate limits among its safeguards.

Access is invitation only. Walmart warns that participation can be suspended and that described features may change or be unavailable to some participants. The page offers an access request, not an unrestricted production integration. We have not tested a transaction through the beta.

What merchants can learn from the design

Our editorial takeaway is to separate three questions when assessing agent shopping: who authorised the task, what the agent may spend, and how a customer can inspect or reverse an unwanted outcome. A successful product search answers none of those questions on its own.

For a merchant evaluating an agent channel, ask the provider to demonstrate the approval screen, the final total presented to the shopper and the purchase record used by support. Include delivery charges, substitutions and a failed or abandoned checkout in the demonstration. Record which behaviour is available today and which appears only on a roadmap.

Do not assume Walmart’s controls are settings available in Shopify, or that this announcement establishes a new Shopify merchant integration. For separate coverage of Shopify’s agent commerce activity, read our Claude Duet and Shop Pay preview report.

The useful comparison is the quality of customer control and recovery, not a claim that every agent channel works the same way. Before relying on one operationally, verify its actual eligibility, approval rules and support process.
