UPS’s 2027 rates start in December: check your costs
UPS announces a 5.9% average daily-rate increase from 21 December 2026. Your agreement, shipment mix and surcharge changes determine the actual impact.
UPS’s US notice puts its 2027 daily-rate increase on 21 December 2026, before the calendar year changes. Ground, Air and International daily rates rise by an average net 5.9%; UPS says the effect depends on shipping characteristics and the customer’s agreement.
For a Shopify merchant, the useful task is to compare representative parcels under the rates you actually buy. A published carrier average is not enough to set a customer-facing delivery charge.
More than the headline percentage changes
The official notice also announces changes to zone and Area Surcharge ZIP lists, and an increase in the minimum billable weight for Additional Handling packages from 40 to 50 pounds. Published Small Business Rates will increase separately; UPS directs customers to the page in their agreement.
A new origin-based fee for qualifying Ground and Ground Saver shipments begins on or after 21 December. UPS says details are due in early November. Detailed rate previews are still to follow as of our 27 October check. The same notice lists a separate domestic fuel-surcharge change for 2 November.
Build a shipment comparison before changing checkout
Our recommendation is to export a representative sample of recent parcels. Include origin and destination ZIP codes, service, actual and billed weight, dimensions, residential delivery, handling charges and the final invoice amount. Keep packaging types separate: an average across all orders can hide a problem concentrated in one product line.
Confirm whether you buy labels through your own carrier agreement, a fulfilment partner or another platform. Ask that provider which published changes reach your account and when. This notice does not establish a specific increase to Shopify-purchased labels or your negotiated rate.
When the detailed tables arrive, rerun the same sample and compare the full charge. Then test any proposed flat-rate or free-shipping threshold against small, heavy and remote-destination baskets. Record the margin assumption and review date rather than quietly spreading one percentage across the catalogue.
Include the operational handoff in that review. Our BFCM checklist covers delivery-message and fulfilment checks. A correct checkout price still needs a delivery promise the operation can meet.
