Reddit plans login tests; shared-link rules remain open

Reddit plans tests outside the US, while search and shared-link access remain unsettled. Check customer links before changing your marketing plans.

Reddit plans to test a primarily logged-in experience in selected markets outside the US. For brands that use Reddit discussions as social proof or a discovery channel, the immediate task is to watch what happens to the links customers actually follow.

In his 29 October explanation, cofounder and CEO Steve Huffman said the boundary between logged-in and logged-out use remains undecided. He described access to the front page as important and said Reddit wants visitors arriving from search or shared links to see the linked content. The announcement does not establish a worldwide date when every reader will need an account.

Why Reddit wants more people signed in

Huffman connects the shift to personalisation, more relevant advertising and tighter control over unauthorised scraping. He says the tests will help determine the eventual boundaries. These are Reddit’s aims, rather than proof that the change will improve advertising results for an individual store.

On the 29 October earnings call, he placed the non-US tests in Q4. He also reported that search referrals had fallen by more than one million per week on average during October. That is Reddit’s reported traffic trend, not a measurement of traffic to merchants.

What a store team can check

Our recommendation is to inventory the Reddit links you use in customer support, buying guides and campaigns. Open those exact destinations while logged out and record the country, device and date. Repeat when Reddit announces the test markets, rather than assuming one successful check describes every reader’s experience.

Keep essential product specifications, warranty details and support answers available on your own website. A discussion can add context, but a customer should not need a third-party account to understand your offer.

For paid campaigns, compare your own conversion and acquisition-cost data over time. The announcement alone is not evidence to increase or cut spend, and it does not establish that Reddit will disappear from search results.

Tests come first. The announcement leaves the treatment of search visitors and shared links unsettled; it is not a worldwide access deadline.
