Shopify Q3 sales hit $119bn: what merchants can infer
Shopify reports $119.145 billion in quarterly GMV. Here is what the platform’s growth does—and does not—tell a merchant planning holiday sales.
Shopify merchants generated $119.145 billion in gross merchandise volume in the third quarter of 2026, up from $92.013 billion a year earlier. Shopify’s own revenue reached $3.742 billion, up 32%, according to its 3 November results.
For founders preparing holiday campaigns, the useful distinction is between growth across the platform and performance inside their own store. These numbers describe the former.
What the quarter measures
The results cover the three months ended 30 September. Shopify reported $816 million in free cash flow and a 22% free cash flow margin, a non-GAAP measure. Its GMV definition includes orders across the platform and certain apps and channels, net of refunds, including shipping, duties and value-added taxes.
That makes GMV different from Shopify revenue, merchant profit or a count of new merchants. Comparing your store’s net sales directly with platform GMV can obscure differences in taxes, refunds and channel mix.
The agent strategy still needs store-level evidence
President Harley Finkelstein connected the results with Shopify’s work on commerce across agents and other surfaces. His 3 November X post presents agents as a new route into commerce.

The headline results do not isolate how much GMV came from AI agents. An agent-led sales forecast needs evidence about actual referrals, completed orders and attribution, rather than a share inferred from total platform growth.
Use the results as context for your holiday plan
Our practical takeaway: keep your own conversion rate, contribution margin, refunds and fulfilment capacity at the centre of decisions. If an AI channel appears in reporting, examine its orders and attribution separately before moving budget. Platform momentum alone cannot establish that an individual campaign will be profitable.
Shopify expects fourth-quarter revenue growth in the low-thirties percentage range. That is company guidance, subject to uncertainty, rather than a forecast for any merchant’s holiday sales.
